Continue after the gift

When a gift subscription ends, the recipient receives up to three follow-up emails with a link to a ready-made cart. They only need to enter their payment card to subscribe. No promo code needed, automatic login, and the delivery address is already filled in.

This feature presents gift recipients with an offer to continue at the right time, with a cart already prepared: all they have left to do is enter their card.

Available on box sites only. Off by default per site.

Go to Settings > Sites, open your site record, After the gift tab.

The settings only appear for a box site. To turn the follow-up on, at least one plan must be linked to a gift card.

Check Follow up gift recipients to activate the feature.

On first activation, Ciklik automatically creates the three email templates. You can then edit them, disable them individually, or delete them like any other email.

For each gift plan, choose a plan in the Plan offered after field followed by the name of the gift plan. Only plans that meet these conditions are offered:

  • active
  • with no commitment period
  • with no scheduled plan changes
  • with no required customization steps

Gifts for which you don’t choose a plan remain outside the follow-up sequence and continue to receive the regular gift end email.

The Welcome offer field offers a discount on the first order (No offer by default). Choose its type, then enter the Offer value:

  • Amount off: a discount in your site’s currency, less than the price of each offered plan.
  • Percentage off: 1 to 90 %. A 100 % discount would make the first order free and is not permitted.

The offer is optional. Without an offer, recipients pay full price.

Three moments to contact the recipient, counted from the gift end date:

  • First email: days before the gift ends (default 15, range 1 to 60)
  • Second email: days after the gift ends (default 2, range 0 to 30)
  • Last reminder: days after the gift ends (default 21, between second and 90)

Example: a gift ending September 30 sends a first email on September 15, October 2, and October 21.

NameTimingDefault content
Gift: before it ends15 days before (default)Invitation to discover the subscription offer with a link.
Gift: after it ends2 days after (default)Reminder that the gift has ended, with the subscription offer.
Gift: last reminder21 days after (default)Final message noting that the link expires soon.

All three emails appear in Content > Email Templates. You can:

  • Edit the text and images like any automated email.
  • Disable an email individually (follow-up continues with the others).
  • Toggle the entire feature on or off via the settings (check or uncheck “Follow up gift recipients”).

You can use the following variables in the email content. Place them in braces with asterisks, in the body or button link:

  • {*first_name*} : recipient’s first name
  • {*shop*} : your shop name
  • {*subscription_name*} : name of the offered plan
  • {*end_date*} : gift end date
  • {*link*} : link to the prefilled cart
  • {*offer*} : description of the discount (inserted automatically)
  • {*unsubscribe_link*} : unsubscribe link (also inserted in the footer)
  • {*offer_deadline*} : offer expiration date (last reminder email only)

Each follow-up email has an unsubscribe link at the bottom. If the recipient clicks to unsubscribe, they no longer receive follow-up emails from your site. They can still access the cart via a direct link.

The link in the emails opens a prefilled cart:

  • The offered plan is selected.
  • The gift delivery address is filled in.
  • The discount (if configured) is applied automatically, one time only.
  • The recipient clicks a button to go to the cart and completes checkout as usual.

Login is automatic for 14 days after each email is sent. After that, accessing the cart requires standard authentication.

If you set up a discount, it appears in the email and applies automatically to the cart. The offer is one-time use.

The recipient pays at checkout with a credit card or PayPal according to your settings. Payment is secure like all others (3D Secure included).

A new subscription starts with standard dates for new subscribers. If the recipient subscribes before the gift ends, they may receive an extra box from the current period. This is expected behavior; there is nothing to change.

The new subscription starts with the same dates as any new subscriber. If the recipient subscribes during the last period of the gift, it is possible they receive an extra box, which is normal and expected.

If the gift buyer gives the gift to themselves (buyer and recipient are the same person), they do not enter the follow-up sequence. They continue to receive the regular gift end email instead.

The follow-up stops if any of these conditions occur:

  • The recipient subscribes: the system records the conversion, whether it comes from the follow-up link or another source.
  • The recipient unsubscribes: if they click the unsubscribe link in an email.
  • The email address is rejected: if the email provider rejects the email (permanent bounce).
  • The gift is deleted: if the gift subscription is deleted, the link no longer works.
  • A more recent gift is still running: if the same recipient received another gift, that one is followed up instead.

Without the follow-up, a gift recipient receives a single email, 2 days after the gift ends: the template of type Gift Card Follow-ups (default subject “Prolongez l’expérience”).

It is still sent in these cases:

  • the follow-up is not enabled on your site;
  • the gift was activated on its buyer’s account;
  • no plan is offered after this gift’s plan.

On a site with the follow-up enabled, this email is no longer sent for covered gifts. Only the three “Continue after the gift” emails go to recipients.

  1. Go to Content > Email Templates.

  2. Open the email of type Gift Card Follow-ups and edit its text.

We recommend adding an Ad campaign link: it adds a discount coupon to the person’s cart when they click the link and place an order on your site.

Automated emails use deliberately plain formatting, for deliverability: it keeps them out of the Promotions tab, which is rarely opened.

The Gift to subscription card of the KPI > Revenue Recovery dashboard shows key metrics (90-day windows, refreshed every hour):

  • Gifts ending in the next 90 days: the pool of upcoming follow-ups.
  • Gifts ended less than 90 days ago: the observation period for conversion rate.
  • Ended gifts followed by a subscription: among those, how many generated at least one new subscription.
  • of which through the follow-up link: among converted, how many come from an order placed via the link.
  • Conversion rate of ended gifts: percentage of converted recipients.
  • Monthly revenue of the subscriptions taken since, still active: monthly recurring revenue from new subscriptions still active.

In Sales > Subscriptions, the Gift ended, not subscribed since filter lists gift recipients who have not yet subscribed. Useful for manual follow-ups or analysis.

What happens if someone subscribes while the gift is still running?

Section titled “What happens if someone subscribes while the gift is still running?”

If the recipient subscribes before the gift ends, a new subscription is created with standard dates. They may receive an extra box from the current period. This is normal. No system prevents or adjusts this behavior; it is a design choice for physical boxes where cycles are fixed.

Can the gift buyer also subscribe after their gift?

Section titled “Can the gift buyer also subscribe after their gift?”

If the gift buyer gives the gift to themselves, they do not enter the follow-up sequence. They receive the regular gift end email instead.

If you turn off “Follow up gift recipients”, follow-up emails no longer send for new gifts. Ongoing gifts receive the regular gift end email again. The email templates remain in case you reactivate the feature.

Can I disable just one of the three emails?

Section titled “Can I disable just one of the three emails?”

Yes. In Content > Email Templates, you can disable each follow-up email independently. If you disable the “Gift: after it ends” email, for example, only the before and last reminder emails send.

How are the new subscription dates calculated?

Section titled “How are the new subscription dates calculated?”

A subscription created via follow-up uses the same date calculation as any new subscription paid at any time: the first payment is immediate, and the next payment is calculated according to the plan’s period (monthly, bimonthly, etc.). No special code adjusts these dates.
